About the name

The Highlands is a residential program for adolescent girls experiencing pregnancy who want to parent their child or participate in a placement option.

Purpose
The primary purpose of The Highlands is to provide residential treatment services to pregnant adolescent girls and their infants upon delivery. A girl may enter the program at any time during her pregnancy and will remain in residence for up to six months after the child’s birth. The Highlands has a capacity for six teens and six infants.

The services offered by The Highlands are designed to alleviate the problems of homelessness for pregnant teens in the Summit County area. In addition to residential care, the program provides a comprehensive array of services that include individualized care and the prevention of high-risk behaviors. The primary focus is to help the expectant teen to think and act responsibly and make constructive choices regarding her future and that of her child.

Referral Procedure
The Highlands is a community-based program and referrals will be accepted through the children serving agencies of Summit County. An intake screening is conducted by the program staff to determine placement eligibility. Upon placement, The Highlands treatment team and the referring agency will develop an individualized plan for each girl. The mother is included in the development of the service plan for her baby at the time of birth.
